Theodore Maiman
Theodore Harold Maiman (July 11, 1927 – May 5, 2007) was an American physicist and engineer best known for building the first working laser. His pioneering ruby-laser experiment, completed in 1960 at Hughes Research Laboratories, inaugurated the laser era and transformed science, technology, and industry.
Early Life and Education
Born in Los Angeles, California, Maiman showed early aptitude in electronics and physics. He studied engineering physics at the University of Colorado and went on to earn advanced degrees at Stanford University, where he focused on experimental physics and electronics.
Invention of the Laser
On May 16, 1960, at Hughes Research Laboratories in Malibu, California, Maiman demonstrated the first laser using a synthetic ruby crystal as the gain medium and a flashlamp as the energy source. The device emitted coherent red light at a wavelength of about 694 nanometers. His brief but landmark report, “Stimulated Optical Radiation in Ruby,” appeared in Nature later that year, overturning widespread skepticism about the feasibility of a practical optical maser (laser) and establishing a new field of research.
Career and Later Work
Maiman continued advancing laser science and technology, contributing to high-power pulsed systems and commercialization efforts. He founded Korad Corporation to develop and manufacture industrial and research lasers and later worked as a consultant and entrepreneur. He authored technical papers and a memoir recounting the development of the laser.
Honors and Legacy
Widely recognized as the inventor of the laser, Maiman received numerous honors from scientific and engineering societies. His work catalyzed applications across communications, precision manufacturing, medicine, metrology, data storage, and fundamental research. He is frequently referred to as the “father of the laser,” and his achievement remains a touchstone in modern applied physics.
